Briefing

“Tai Po Literary Trail” Virtual exhibition as part of the New Territories East Literary Promotion Research Project, Jiu Jik Park are thrilled to partner with a local cultural research and gaming development team - Frozen Veggies Kulturkreis, supported by the Research Centre for Chinese Literature & Literary Culture of The Education University of Hong Kong, bringing a virtual exhibition accessible on various electronic platforms.

The exhibition showcases dozens of exhibits to present the cultural and artistic development of Tai Po over the past century. Listed as one of the oldest areas in Hong Kong, Tai Po has quietly played a crucial role of being the "backside of the city" - a preferred retreat from the crowded urban, possessing a unique yet significant collection of poetry and history. As the investigation continued,  the findings pointed that Tai Po theatre held a significant position as cultural and literary venues in Tai Po area thought out the time. The team determined to present the research findings in the 3D restoration of Tai Po theatre along side with the theatre street in 1950s.

Ideation

While we initially aimed for a realistic 3D restoration, we faced challenges in sourcing accurate architectural details. We analyzed vintage photographs and conducted in-depth studies on theatres constructed in 1950s, leading us to explore "the possibilities of continuing the legacy of the first generation of Tai Po Theatre" , infusing the project with both historical essence and artistic flair by embracing a creative aesthetic interpretation of the old Hong Kong atmosphere. With the help of 3D software Blender and game development software Unity, we set up the Hong Kong 1950s environment encourage our audience to explore in Tai Po theatre street and the interior space of Tai Po Theatre.

A 2D version in pixel graphics created with RPG Maker are available at the moment, while the 3D virtual exhibition will be released in mid-2025.
